Daniel Nwokoro Onwubuta, popularly known as the “Gentle Giant Alakuku,” was a legendary Nigerian figure from Isuochi, Abia State, famously reported to be over 11 feet tall. Often featured in Onitsha market literature during the late 1950s, he is recognized as a remarkable historical figure who worked with colonialists, with stories of his life capturing popular imagination. 

  • Height and Legend: He was described in accounts as standing 11 ft 6 inches11 ft 6 inches11 ft 6 inches (3.5 meters3.5 meters3.5 meters) tall, making him one of the tallest figures in Nigerian history.
  • Origin: He hailed from Isuochi, Abia State, and his story was popularised as part of Nigerian folklore.
  • The Literature: A 1959 pamphlet titled The Gentle Giant “Alakuku” written by Highbred Maxwell documented his life and death, reinforcing his status as a legendary figure.
  • Cultural Impact: His name became synonymous with immense size, often used in stories to portray him as a gentle but imposing guardian
