In days past, when we used to match in the school field we sang that
“The day is bright, its bright and fair
Oh Happy day, a day of joy — a happy day of joy”
The words of this song aptly describes the above occasion.
Really it was a wow on 15th August when Igbo families, and friends of the Igbo Union in Antwerp gathered in Park Noord just for an eat out. The word that comes to mind in describing the atmosphere of that day range from ambience to festival and on to carnival. It was a gathering of every generation, gender and class of the Igbos in Antwerp Belgium. As their clarion call, “Igbo Union !!!” rents the air and the reply of “Nwanne di na mba” follows simultaniously. An assurance to the members that we are in unity even far from home.
It was the first public outing of the newly elected government led by U D Njoku and Nicholas Onovo (Double Chief). They had promised the union to hit the ground running in style. That day, they did in any measure disappoint the expectations of the union and every one related to it.
The food was was not just sumptuous, it was also surplus. And enough assorted drinks to meet the needs of every one present.
There were games and sports. One vibrant lady took over the table Tennis and trashed every one that come within her scope, both male and female. Anyways, it was revealed that she was once a police woman and had perfected it that sport during her days of service in the force.
Then there were the draught boards. Boy o boy. I do not want to mention names here. I saw wonders in manipulations. One fellow was playing with both hands. Real example of the more you look the less you see. If you know this, do you know the other.
One of the highlights of the day was when the women were called out to receive packages and gifts. It was quite emotional, as most of them did not expect such magnanimity from the men folks. Was quite romantic.
Like I said, it was a woaw.
