Certain things seem too good to be true, but they are the truth. In Nigeria, many politicians usually take politics as a do-or-die affair before the election and after the election as they engage in many atrocities and do anything to be in a political position. How would you feel if you heard that in this same Nigeria, a politician once denounced himself as the winner of an election because he detected that the election was rigged in his favour and declared his opposition party and candidate as the election winner?

Today we shall talk about Afolabi Olawole, the only Nigerian politician who has openly rejected his victory in an election and declared the opposition party flagbearer as the genuine winner.

In 2013, Afolabi Olawole, a Local Government Councilor-Elect in Offa Kwara State, openly rejected his ward’s election results because he claimed that his religious beliefs forbid cheating.

Afolabi Olawole, who was then a flagbearer of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, in his ward. He was declared as the winner of his local government councilorship rerun election by the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission, KWASIEC, but he openly declared that he lost in all the eight polling units in his ward where he was declared to have won, and made it known that the All Progressive Congress, APC candidate, Adefioye Kayode, won convincingly in all the polling units. This revelation made by him prompted the reason for rejecting his winning declaration, as he believes that one day everyone will be held accountable for all their actions on this earth, and he claimed that cheating other people is against his belief.

Afolabi Olawole then advised the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission, KWASIEC, to release the authentic results and declared the bonafide candidate who won the election.
