The Story Of David Vetter, The Boy That Lived His Whole Life In A Plastic Bubble

In the year 1971, a boy known as David Vetter was born and he later grew up to be known as the boy in the bubble. When David was born, his Mother could not even lay her hands on him because he had a severe combined immune deficiency (SCID).View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

This disease is a primary immunodeficiency disease, the cure for this disease was a bone marrow transplant from a donor that matched David. Sadly they could not find a bone marrow match for David in his family.

From the day David was born he lived in a bubble, his parents never laid their hand on his skin. David lived in a plastic bubble in their home for 12 years, his body system was not strong enough to live in the outside world.View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

David had to stay away from any form of dirt or germ totally for his own safety. The only treatment for David at that time was to just live in the bubble, if not for the bubble David would not have lived for 12 years.

David was happy living in his bubble, his parents made sure he had the best life and they made sure he did not miss out on anything. He was home schooled, he was able to play with his sister and have fun like any other kid but in his bubble.View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

His parents made sure he was able to move around the whole house in his bubble. His parents had to use gloves whenever they want to give him clothes or even food. They had to make sure he was not in contact with any germ.

There were alot of tests that were done, alot of research were carried out in other to find a cure to David’s illness. In the year 1984, David received a bone marrow transfer with hopes that he would survive outside the bubble.View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

David was able to live out of his bubble for 4 months after the bone marrow transfer. David later died of lymphoma but he was able to feel what the outside world felt like. David even had friends when he lived in his bubble, he was not completely isolated from the world.View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

Through David’s condition, scientist and doctors have learnt how to treat and help many children with the same illness. They do this by diagnosing them early in life. Once the illness is diagnosed, a bone marrow transplant is initiated immediately to save the child from living in a bubble like David.
