Wike Defends Tinubu, Slams Critics Over ₦39bn ICC Renovation
Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has taken a strong swipe at critics of the ₦39 billion renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC), recently inaugurated and renamed after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Wike made these remarks during the commissioning of the Outer Southern Expressway’s Left-hand Service Carriageway in Abuja on Friday. He dismissed the backlash, particularly from Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, who called the project a “misplaced priority” and urged government to focus on urgent needs like basic education.
Wike countered by insisting that the ICC upgrade was comprehensive and necessary, arguing that only those with “no good taste” would question the project. He said that apart from the structure’s blockwork, every aspect of the facility was overhauled.
“If you love this country, you cannot criticise that project,” Wike declared, stressing that the facility symbolizes Nigeria’s stature as the “Giant of Africa” and must reflect that status through world-class infrastructure.
The minister further defended the project’s cost, pointing out inflation and currency devaluation since the ICC’s initial construction in 1991. He said critics lacked understanding of value and modernization needs.
Wike also took aim at Reuben Abati, former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, mocking his past inability to defend his principal. “I’m not like those who couldn’t defend their bosses. I will defend mine,” Wike said.
In a particularly controversial remark, Wike added, “If you want to die, I have land to bury you,” dismissing continued criticism of the ICC naming and spending as baseless. “Africa’s population is too high. So if you want to die, you die.”
He concluded by praising the administration’s commitment to infrastructure and urged citizens to appreciate progress when they see it.
