I remember in my 1st semester in 400 level as an undergraduate, we had a course, GENETIC ENGINEERING,
the course was taken by Dr. Mrs Iveren Winifred Nyinoh . The course was supposed to give us an ideal insight into the world of how genetically modified products come to be in our contemporary society.
Of course she did justice to the course and at some point, I started to withdraw from eating a lot of things.
My fear and consequent withdrawal started when I learned that cloning an organism is possible with the technology of this GMO concept.
But more dreary was when I learned that, a donkey and a horse was able to crossbreed and brought a progeny.
All these began to give me an idea of how far man is willing to travel in the path of knowledge to make sure he is able to create what was never in existence into being. Wow.
This and many other things gave me the desire to go back to organic farming and consumption of products got from it.
One of the products got by the GMO technology is what you see here in the picture, this maize.
Ordinary, an organic maize will never be like this but see what technology , a tool to aid man in meeting up with his insatiable desire to become a creator has done.
The chemical put into use to bring out this result is something that is not ideally compatible with human system. It effect may not be now, but what of the long term effect and it consequence?
But this is what we want to consume. This is what we want to prove, that we can do it.
I write to you as a plant science and biotechnologist.
That’s having seen a little about how far this technology have come,
I have resolved to go back the organic world where, things were always at the snail speed with no consequences. That is where i am now and I only hope you can join me in the inside.
