The United States government has imposed visa restrictions on some Nigerians whom they have discovered undermined the democratic process during the 2023 general elections.
The United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, disclosed this on Monday.
In a tweet, he wrote: “We have imposed visa restrictions on specific individuals who undermined the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections.”
He reiterated America’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and the rule of law.
The United States warned last year that it would impose visa restrictions on any individuals who undermined the democratic process in the Nigerian general elections.
It is note worthy that the American government has placed similar visa bans on Nigerian politicians in the past.
They question that begs for anszwer at this point, is the efficacy of these bans on these unrepentant Nigerian criminals from all works of life; be they politicians or other government officials which include security and military personel and even now the judiciary may be included.
I believe that this action is worthy as it will warn these political manipulators that actions have consequencies. This will also warn those who are yet to make decisions relating to the election to think twice before making any decisions.
