With the announcement by Timipre Sylvia, The Nigerian minister for Petroleum Resources that the government of Nigeria has budgeted a huge some money for the rehabilitation of the petrolem refinery in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, a wild response has come from the cross section of Nigerians. Some applauding the move, whili some think it is not an economically sound policy.
Some one described it as embalming a dead refinerey to make look good. That it is a wasteful venture, as itt is an open avenue created by this government to use to siphon Money and line up their pockets.
Another suggested that these seemingly bogus projects be privatilized as this will spare the goverment the stress of investing heavily on the running these parastatals.

She stated this on Thursday while reacting to the Federal Executive Council’s announcement over the approval of the sum of $1.5 billion for the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery in Rivers state.
Timipre Sylva, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, had made this known to State House correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.
Sylva said the Ministry of Petroleum Resources had presented a proposal to the council presided over by Buhari to rehabilitate the refinery.
The minister announced that the rehabilitation of the refinery will commence in three phases, adding that the first phase is to be completed in 18 months, which will take the refinery to a production of 90 percent of its nameplate capacity.READ ALSO: Unemployment: Nigeria Ranked Second Jobless Country
Sylva noted that the second phase is to be completed in 24 months and all the final stage will be completed in 44 months and consultations are approved.
Reacting in a post on her Twitter page on Thursday, Aisha Yesufu accused the president of being determined to destroy the country.
She wrote: “Buhari is not only the most corrupt person to rule Nigeria, but he is also the most callous, heartless, irresponsible and pathetic person to rule Nigeria. He is determined to destroy Nigeria that gave him everything and wasted its resources on him!”
South-South Forum Commends Buhari, Sylva over Plan to Fix Port Harcourt Refinery
The South-south Emerging Leaders Forum (SELF) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, for the approval of $1.5 billion by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery.
Its National Coordinator, Mr. Benjamin Kolowei, in a statement issued Thursday said, the move to fix the refinery would positively impact the economic activities in the South-south region
It stated: “Our forum received the news to fix Port Harcourt refinery with great joy. The move shows the commitment of the current administration to tackle the challenges facing our oil sector head on.
“We believe that if the refinery start operating at its capacity, it will improve a lot of economic activities in the South-south region especially and the country at large will benefit from the project. Specifically, there will be employment not only for the people of the region but Nigerians generally.”
The group noted that it was happy that the administration had taken a bold step not only to fix the refinery, but the operations and maintenance, which are the major issues are considered in the approval.
