We Have Come Home

When the breath of air has turned from cold to warmth
When the trees have turned from pines to palms
When the looks have turned from squints to glares
And when the feelings have turned
from disdain to happy welcomes
Then we can say
We have come home

When the cold weather is no longer winter but harmattan
When the sloppy kisses have become hearty hugs
When the ever-sunless sky now glows
Golden yellow with the even sun
And when we no longer have to carry papers on our persons
to prove that we are human beings
Then we can say
We have come home

When the colour of our skin is of no significance
for our neighbour’s respect and feelings
When your own off-springs are really yours and not the state’s
When we can live in a land where we can aspire to the highest
without fear, favour or pain
When our heart can say to you, this is your land
Then we will really say
We have come home
